BUT CHLOE’S MOM DOES IT…WHY CAN’T WE?

Another weekend of soccer games, birthday parties, and general socialization for the kids.

As I’m around all the different parents, kids, parenting skills, etc. the infamous question always comes up. “Why can we do “X” like they do at Chloe’s house?” I never thought I would respond like my parents until I did. “If Chloe decided to jump off a tall bridge, just because, would you do that too?!” I’ve realized that this is a hot topic amongst parents.

As parents we must set up rules and boundaries. In researching this, the CDC recommends ensuring all family members get aligned about family rules.

How can all family members get on the same page about rules?

There are several steps that can help all family members be consistent. Parents or caregivers can:

1. Talk about what rules would help their family and agree which ones to set.

2. Post the rules in the house so everyone can know them.

3. Talk with other adults who care for their children about the rules to make sure

everyone knows what is allowed and not allowed.

4. Ask all caregivers to be consistent in monitoring and enforcing the rules.

5. Remind children about the rules by repeating and posting them in the home.

(Centers For Disease Control, 2019)

The wonderful thing about setting up these household rules is that children will begin to learn and understand why these family rules are important. As parents we must explain these rules shape our family and our beliefs. Although at Chloe’s house they may have their own set of rules that are best for their family, but in our house, we have the rules that are best for our family.
